One of the first drawings I made for BTI was an index of
the various sprite palettes Mario has used throughout the old games. It didn't include every game, and completely disregarded all those games where Mario appeared on non-Nintendo hardware, but this afternoon I've been watching a
playthrough of Super Mario Bros. Special, a sequel for Super Mario Bros. made by Hudson for the PC-8801. If you never heard of it, it's because it was really horrible. The entire game uses no more than 8 colors, the physics are completely off, and most notably, the screen doesn't scroll - once you reach the right side of the screen, it turned black for a second and you'd be on the left side of the next screen, resulting in some really cheap deaths. Despite its gaping flaws, there are some enemies and items from Donkey Kong and Mario Bros. added, and Fire Mario wears red gloves, which is pretty much the reason that I had to include their sprites.
