Super Mario Bros. 3 is one of my favorite games, but there's one thing about them that's always bothered me. Hammer Suit Mario, one of the best power-ups in this or any game, is fireproof in the crouching position, and can kill pretty much everything by tossing hammers in an arc. "Everything" includes bosses, Thwomps, and even ghosts. Turtles and stone monsters, of course they would crumble under the force of a hammer*, but why the hell can hammers kill ghosts? It seems slightly more logical for fireballs to do that; if I was a ghost, I would be a lot more likely to avoid extreme heat capable of dispersing gaseous bodies than a metal sledge on a stick I could easily pass through. For years I haven't been able to obtain a satisfying reason for this.
*No, I haven't hit any turtles with hammers to support this hypothesis.
